BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Jason McLaughlin's goal with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation capped a UAB comeback and gave the 8th-ranked Blazers (2-0) a 2-1 victory over No. 24 North Carolina Sunday afternoon at the UAB Nike Classic at West Campus Field.
After a scoreless first half, Carolina (1-1) took the lead at 1-0 in the 59th minute (58:59) of the game on a goal by junior forward Chris Carrieri, who knocked in a header off a cross from teammate Caleb Norkus.
The Blazers missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 72nd minute (71:59), as midfielder Roberto Najarro missed a penalty kick attempt after being fouled in front of the North Carolina goal.
UAB finally tied the game at 1-1 at the 77:08 mark as Blazer forward Martin Rey headed in a ball in the goal mouth on a throw-in by Lane Knight.
The game appeared headed to overtime as the teams battled for control of the ball in the final minute, but UAB pushed the ball back up the field one final time and Knight hit a cross from the right wing that McLaughlin headed past Tar Heel goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey into the left corner off the net. It was Knight's second assist of the afternoon.
Tournament MVP David Clemente had seven saves and picked up the win in goal for UAB. Ueltschey had two saves in the goal for the Tar Heels.
Members of the UAB Nike Classic All-Tournament Team included Clemente (UAB), who was the MVP, Rumbani Munthali (UAB), Lane Knight (UAB), Martin Rey (UAB), Chris Carrieri (North Carolina), Noz Yamauchi (North Carolina), Eddie Robinson (North Carolina), Greg Chirisman (Illinois-Chicago), Chris Jamal (Illinois-Chicago), Collin Phillips (College of Charleston) and Ido Ronen (College of Charleston).
