Chapel Hill, N.C. - University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players Porter Wilkinson and Kellie Thompson each were named Women's Division I Preseason All-Americas by Street & Smith's College Lacrosse USA, the web site has announced. Wilkinson, a junior defender, was named to the first team. Thompson, a junior attacker/midfielder, was named to the second team.
Wilkinson (Charlottesville, Va.) was named a 2000 first-team All-America by US Lacrosse and the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association. She was Carolina's defensive leader and also earned All-ACC honors last season. She was among the Tar Heel leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers and often marked the best offensive players on opposing teams. Wilkinson also was named first-team All-South region by the IWLCA.
Thompson (Grasonville, Md.) was named an honorable mention All-America last year after she led UNC in goals (36), assists (20) and points (56), establishing personal career highs in each category. She tied a school record midway through the season by scoring six goals in Carolina's 14-13 win over No. 16 Penn State on Apr. 13 in Baltimore. Thompson also was named second-team All-South region by the IWLCA.
Carolina opens its 2001 regular season on Feb. 25 against Davidson in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels open preseason action on Feb. 17 when it hosts the South of the Border Tournament.
