Tar Heels Back on the Road at Florida State
North Carolina, ranked No. 6 in the nation in both The Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls, takes to the road for the third time in five Atlantic Coast Conference games when it visits Florida State on Saturday afternoon. The Tar Heels are coming off a 92-65 win at home against Clemson on Wednesday night.
If Carolina defeats the Seminoles on Saturday, it will improve to 3-0 this season on the road in ACC play. The last time the Tar Heels started a season 3-0 on the road in the ACC was 1986-87, when UNC went a perfect 7-0 on the road on the way to a 14-0 regular season.
Carolina has won 11 games in a row since losing back-to-back decisions to Michigan State and Kentucky. The 11-game winning streak is UNC's longest since beginning the `97-'98 season 17-0. UNC's four-game ACC winning streak is its longest since winning eight in a row in the ACC during the 1997-98 season.
The Seminoles are 5-12 overall and 0-4 in the ACC. They are coming off an 89-71 loss at Virginia on Tuesday night.
Carolina's 11-game winning streak is currently tied for the third-longest streak in the nation. Georgetown (16), Stanford (16) are the only schools in the country with longer current win streaks than the Tar Heels, and Fresno State (11) also has won 11 in a row.
UNC returns to action at home on Wednesday night when it hosts Virginia for a 7 p.m. contest in the Smith Center.
Carolina and the Seminoles
The Tar Heels lead the series, 25-6, including a 7-2 record at the Tallahasee-Leon County Civic Center. Since Florida State joined the ACC in 1991-92, Carolina has won 15 of the 20 games between the two schools, including 15 of the last 18. Carolina's only loss to FSU outside ACC competition came in the 1972 Final Four. The Tar Heels dropped a 79-75 decision to the Seminoles in the national semifinals before defeating Louisville, 105-91, in the consolation game. Carolina also won a pair of 1995 NCAA Tournament games in the Leon County Civic Center.
