Lisa Navas, the head coach at Barry University for the past nine years, has joined the University of North Carolina softball staff as an assistant coach. Her primary responsibilities will include working with the catchers and infielders, and she also will help coach the Tar Heels' offense, which ranked in the nation's top 10 last season.
Under Navas' direction, Barry was the NCAA Division II runner-up in 1998 and finished fifth in the nation in 1994. The Buccaneers advanced to the regional tournament in six of her nine years at the school. Navas was named South Region Coach of the Year in 1994 and earned Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and 97.
Navas also served as an assistant athletic director and compliance coordinator at Barry. She has been an active member in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and served as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Softball Championship committee.
Prior to taking over the head coaching job at Barry, she served as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri. She played at NAIA powerhouse Oklahoma City University and in 1986 helped her team to a second-place finish at the NAIA National Tournament. She participated in trials for the 1986 U.S. Pan-American Games team.
"Lisa will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program," said head coach Donna Papa, who is heading into her 16th season as coach of the Tar Heels. "I'm thrilled to have her join our staff."
North Carolina is coming off a record-breaking season in which the team finished 47-17, the best mark in school history. The Tar Heels open the 2001 season Feb. 3 at South Carolina.
