CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Senior guard Nikki Teasley has been named a preseason candidate for the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award for the third time in her career. Teasley also was included on the preseason list before her sophomore and junior years.
The candidates were selected by a vote of the Board of Selectors, comprised of coaches, journalists and analysts. The Naismith Awards program is in its 34th year.
A 6-0 player from Washington, D.C., Teasley averaged 14.6 points and 6.2 assists as a junior in 1999-2000, when she was named third-team All-ACC and ACC Tournament MVP. She returns to the court this fall after taking the 2000-01 school year away from the team and UNC.
Heading into the season, Teasley needs seven assists to take over as UNC's career leader in that category. She also holds UNC's single-season record for assists with 211 in 1998-99.
North Carolina opens the 2001-02 season on Nov. 9, hosting George Mason in the Preseason WNIT. The Tar Heels will play exhibition games on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.
