Three North Carolina guards earned preseason honors Sunday at Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Media Day in Greensboro, N.C. Senior Nikki Teasley and junior Coretta Brown were voted to the Preseason All-Conference Team, while freshman Leah Metcalf was selected as the ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year.
The Tar Heels, 15-14 last season, were picked to finish second in the ACC race by a vote of the media.
Brown earned second-team All-ACC honors last season when she led the league in assists and ranked fifth in scoring with 15.9 points per game. Teasley was the 2000 ACC Tournament MVP and is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year Award. She enters the 2001-02 season just seven assists from taking over the UNC career record in that category.
Metcalf, a 5-7 point guard from Charlotte, has averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 assists in UNC's two exhibition games.
UNC opens the season Friday against George Mason in a first round WNIT game. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.
