CHAPEL HILL -- Tar Heel Town, the free, outdoor festival before every home football game at the University of North Carolina, will open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 10), before the Tar Heels and the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest square off at Noon.
The pre-game party on Polk Place is held on the quad between South Building on Cameron Avenue and Wilson Library on South Road.
Head coach John Bunting and the Carolina football team will arrive for the "Old Well Walk" at approximately 9:40 a.m. beginning at Cameron Avenue and continuing through the quad to Kenan Stadium.
Carolina's student band, The Marching Tar Heels, will sound a musical welcome when the team bus arrives. Fans may offer encouragement as the players head for the stadium to suit up, walking through a spirited musical tunnel created by the band.
Oldies 100.7 will broadcast live starting between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Barbecue plates will be on sale and giant TV screens will show the nation's top college football games and news live. Activities will include face-painting, music and games -- among them, a 100-foot inflatable obstacle course and a quarterback challenge.
Two 60-inch Mitsubishi televisions and a Direct TV satellite system from NOW! Audio Video will show college football games from around the country. Fans can register all season at the UNC Athletic Department tent at Tar Heel Town to win one of the TVs or the satellite system. Winners' names will be drawn after the Duke game on Nov. 17.
Festival sponsors are the athletic department, the UNC General Alumni Association, the Chancellor's Office, the Educational Foundation Inc., Oldies 100.7, Utz Quality Foods Inc. and NOW! Audio Video.
The Marching Tar Heels will escort fans from Tar Heel Town to Kenan Stadium in time for their pre-game show of traditional Carolina athletics songs including "Here Comes Carolina" and "Aye! Zigga Zoomba."
Tar Heel Town is accessible to all via brick sidewalks along the quad. Visitors are encouraged to park in the pay lots off Franklin and Rosemary streets or ride Tar Heel Express Bus Shuttles. Buses will run to the festival beginning at 9:30 a.m. from the N.C. 54 East park-and-ride lot across from the William and Ida B. Friday Continuing Education Center and the parking lot beside Belk's at University Mall. Buses will begin running at 11 a.m. from Carrboro Plaza off N.C. 54 West and the Southern Village park-and-ride lot on U.S. 15-501 south of Carrboro. Fares will be $2 one-way and $4 round-trip.
