CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team scored six first inning runs and added three more in the eighth en route to a 9-4 win over Coastal Carolina Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels improve to 23-0 in the month of February under third-year head coach Mike Fox.
UNC freshman right-hander Scott Manshack (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out four for the win in his collegiate debut. Jason Howell pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three, for his first save. CCU's Scott Sturkie (1-2) lasted just the first inning, giving up six UNC runs on five hits for the loss.
Adam Greenberg led off Carolina's big first inning with a double to right field. Russ Adams followed with a single to knock in the game's first run. UNC's first six batters eventually scored in the inning, which included a Sean Farrell double, a two-run single by Ralph Roberts and a sacrifice fly by Chris Maples. In Greenberg's second at bat of the inning, he singled to make the score 6-0.
Coastal cut into the lead with a run on a wild pitch in the fourth and Luke Johnson's RBI single in the sixth made the game 6-2. Two more Coastal runs in the seventh inning pulled the Chanticleers to within 6-4, but Carolina answered with three runs in the eighth for the game's final runs. Howell had an RBI single in eighth, while Roberts and Maples each knocked in a run in the inning.
Carolina had four batters with multiple hit games, including Howell (3-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run), Greenberg (2-for-3, 1 RBI, 1 run), Adams (2-for-5, 1 RBI, 2 runs) and Farrell (2-for-4, 2 runs). Roberts was 1-for-3 with a game-high three RBIs.
With the win, Carolina runs its record to 3-0, while Coastal drops to 3-2.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts William and Mary at 3 p.m. UNC freshman left-hander Daniel Moore is slated to start for the Tar Heels.
