Carolina Men's Tennis Prepares For Texas Tour

Chapel Hill, NC - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team leaves Thursday for a three match series with a troika of Texas Universities as part of its action over spring break.
The Tar Heels will kick off action Saturday against the #13 Texas Longhorns. The match will be played in Austin at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns are currently 6-1 and have been ranked as high as #6 this season. Texas competes in the Big 12 Conference and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships last season. The match is slated for 1:00 p.m. Texas leads Carolina in all-time meetings 2-9.
Following the action in Austin, the Heels will travel to Houston to battle the Rice Owls. The Owls are currently undefeated on the season at 10-0. The match will be played Monday, March 5th at 3:00 p.m. at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Owls have already competed against the ACC this season blanking N.C. State 7-0 on February 18th. The meeting will also be a reunion for Tar Heel head Coach Sam Paul and Rice head coach Ron Smarr. Earlier in his coaching career, Paul acted as Smarr's assistant at the University of South Carolina. The Tar Heels will meet the Owls for only the fifth time in school history. Carolina currently holds a 3-1 advantage in previous matches with Rice.
Carolina's final stop in Texas will be in College Station where the Heels will meet #5 Texas A&M University. The Aggies are currently 9-2 on the season and just recently defeated #22 Miami 5-2. The Aggies two loses came to #13 Texas and #3 UCLA. The meeting will mark the tenth all-time meeting between the Tar Heels and the Aggies. Texas A&M holds an 8-1 advantage in previous contests.
Traveling for the Tar Heels will be seniors David Cheatwood, Chad Riley, and Aron Breziner, junior Marcio Petrone, sophomores Greg Archer and Trystan Meniane, and freshmen Nicholas Monroe and Ben Aiken. Carolina is currently ranked #47 and holds a 4-3 record.
