Chapel Hill, NC - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team travels to Atlanta, Ga. today in preparation for its Friday battle with the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech.
Friday's match will be the 34th career meeting between the two programs and plays a critical role in this year's ACC regular season race. Currently the Jackets sit in second place in the ACC with a 6-1 mark and the Tar Heels are in third with a 4-2 league record. A victory by the Heels would help Carolina battle Tech for the second place ACC postiton. On the season the Jackets are 16-4 overall and the Tar Heels are 9-7. The Tar Heels have won five of their last seven matches with losses only to Duke and Wake Forest. Meanwhile the Jackets have won 11 of their last 12, losing to Duke, and are currently ranked #20 nationally.
The Georgia Tech match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday and will be played at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels will travel to Belton, S.C. after the Tech match to finish up the regular season against Clemson. Carolina is scheduled to battle the Tigers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The match is being played on neutral courts in Belton, S.C. to avoid a conflict with the Duke-Clemson women's tennis match which is being played in Clemson that day at 12 p.m.
The Tigers are currently 4-17 on the season and will also be concluding their season with the Carolina match. With the ACC Championships in Orlando, Fla. beginning April 19th, the meeting gives each school one final test before beginning post season play.
The Tar Heels will most likely go with the same line-up from the Duke match. Singles included, #1 Marcio Petrone, #2 Nicholas Monroe, #3 David Cheatwood, #4 Trystan Meniane, #5 Greg Archer, and #6 Chad Riley. Doubles consisted of, #1 Cheatwood/Monroe, #2 Petrone/Archer, #3 Riley/Meniane.
