CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Duke University baseball team topped North Carolina, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in the deciding game of a three-game series between the two schools at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels had won 12 straight over their arch rivals since 1998 before dropping the final two games of this weekend's series.
Carolina scored 17 runs and had 29 hits in the first two games of the series but saw its bats go cold in Sunday's shutout loss. Five Duke pitchers held the Tar Heels to just six hits in clinching the series two games to one.
Duke got off to a quick start against the Tar Heels with one run in the first and two more in the second for a 3-0 lead. Kevin Kelly led off the game with a single and Drew Jerdan's two-out single drove him home to put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0. David Mason led off the second with a single and came home on a sacrifice fly by Adam Loftin. Gideon Thompson doubled and scored as Duke pulled ahead 3-0 and knocked Tar Heels starter Daniel Moore from the game. Moore (4-4) entered the game having recorded wins in each of his last two starts, but the freshman lefty lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits in the loss.
The Blue Devils added their fourth and final run of the afternoon in the fifth inning. Wes Goodner singled and scored on a double off the wall in right field by Jerdan. The Devils threatened for more in the inning, but Whitley Benson came out of the bullpen and got Thompson to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the Tar Heels within striking distance. Benson pitched the final 4.2 innings out of the bullpen for Carolina and allowed just two hits and no runs in his longest outing of the year.
Justin Dilucchio held Carolina in check throughout the first 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. Dilucchio walked five but took the win to improve to 2-2 on the season.
But Carolina got into the Duke bullpen and had its chances in the latter innings of the game. UNC could not capitalize however, stranding nine base runners over the final four innings and 13 overall. In the sixth, Carolina loaded the bases before Ron Braun popped out to the shortstop to end the inning. In the seventh, UNC had two runners on with just one out, but Chad Prosser flied out to center and Russ Adams popped out to the second baseman. In the eighth, it was more of the same, as Carolina loaded the bases with just one out but failed to get a runner across.
Adam Greenberg (1-for-3), Adams (2-for-4), Sean Farrell (2-for-5) and Ralph Roberts (1-for-4) were the only Tar Heels to collect hits on the afternoon. Farrell had a team-high seven hits in the series.
With the win, the Blue Devils gains three points in the race between UNC (25-20, 6-12 ACC) and Duke (20-25, 7-10 ACC) for the inaugural Carlyle Cup.
The Tar Heels conclude a 10-game homestand with games this week against UNC Wilmington (Tuesday, 7 p.m.) and UNC Greensboro (Wednesday, 7 p.m.). Carolina returns to ACC action next weekend with three games at Clemson.
