CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina baseball team defeated UNC Greensboro, 10-3, Wednesday evening at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina, which ended a three-game losing streak with the win, improves to 26-21, while UNCG falls to 22-21 overall.
The Tar Heels broke out to an early 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in both the second and third innings. Jason Howell doubled and scored in the second, while Chris Maples scored UNC's second run by racing home from second base on a ground out by Ron Braun. Sean Farrell's RBI triple in the third pushed Carolina's lead to 3-0 and Howell knocked home Farrell for the four-run Carolina lead.
Meanwhile, freshman Scott Manshack held the Spartans to just one hit - a first-inning single by left-fielder Chad Hayes - and no runs through the first six innings as UNC extended its lead to 7-0. Russ Adams singled home Adam Greenberg in the fifth, while Jeremy Cleveland and Chad Prosser both scored unearned runs in the sixth for Carolina's seven-run margin.
UNCG got to Manshack in the top of the seventh. Manshack gave up two runs on three singles and he walked one in the inning before being relieved by Daniel Moore with no outs and runners on first and second. Moore walked the only batter he faced, Chris Mittendorf, to load the bases. But Whitley Benson came out of the bullpen and erased the UNCG threat. Benson collected three consecutive outs to limit the Spartans to just their two runs in the inning.
Carolina answered with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to go on top 10-2. Jason Howell singled and scored, while Chris Maples doubled home Jeremy Cleveland and scored himself on a throwing error by UNCG second baseman Shane Schumaker to end Carolina's scoring.
Howell and Cleveland were each 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs to lead UNC at the plate. Chris Maples also drove in a run and scored twice in a game where seven different Tar Heels scored and seven different Tar Heels had one RBI.
UNCG starter Taft Cable gave up four runs on three hits over 3.0 innings to fall to 3-2. Manshack got the win to improve to 2-3. Benson had an outstanding effort in relief to earn his third save. The freshman righty struck out five and allowed one run on three hits in three innings. The ninth-inning run Benson surrendered to UNCG is the only run he has allowed in his last 10 innings of work.
Carolina is back in action this weekend with three ACC games at Clemson. Games times are as follows: Friday at 7:15 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
