Following a 4-0 week for the Tar Heels, North Carolina players swept the ACC's weekly softball honors, announced Monday afternoon. Senior shortstop Michelle Semmes was named ACC Player of the Week and senior Radara McHugh earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Tar Heels are 34-17-1 following doubleheader sweeps of UNC Greensboro and Maryland last week.
Semmes, a fourth-year starter from Fayetteville, N.C., was 8-for-15 with four doubles at the plate for an average of .533 over the four games. In the first game against UNC Greensboro last Tuesday, Semmes went 4-for-4 and took over first place on UNC's career total bases list. In the second game at Maryland on Saturday, she got her 233rd career hit to move into a tie for first on the Tar Heels' career list.
Semmes is batting .312 for the season with a team-leading 31 RBI.
McHugh, from Tulsa, Okla., made three appearances last week, earning two wins and a save without giving up a single run. She struck out 18 batters and gave up just nine hits over 13.2 innings of work.
Now 20-10 on the season, McHugh has an ERA of 0.93 and has pitched 22.1 scoreless innings over her last five appearances.
Following a busy week, the Tar Heels are idle until the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on May 11. UNC will host the tournament, which runs through May 13, at Walnut Creek Park in Raleigh.
