Baseball Blasts Liberty, 13-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina baseball team dropped Liberty, 13-4, Tuesday evening in non-conference baseball action at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels improve to 28-23 with the win, which tied UNC's second-largest margin of victory of the year, while the Flames fall to 27-18 with the loss.
Freshman right-hander Scott Manshack collected his second consecutive win to improve to 3-3. Manshack allowed two runs on seven hits with a career-high eight strikeouts over a career-high seven innings in the victory.
Carolina pounced on the Flames early with a seven-run third inning. UNC sent 12 batters to the plate, and got five singles and drew three walks en route to the 7-0 lead. Chad Prosser, Jeremy Cleveland and Chris Maples all had RBI singles, while Ron Braun added a sacrifice fly and Ralph Roberts drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in runs as well.
The Tar Heels added five more runs in the fifth for a 12-0 advantage. Cleveland led off the inning with a double to left-center and scored on a Ryan Blake single. Maples, who was hit by a Jason Jones pitch, scored on a wild pitch by Jones later in the inning. Prosser's two-run double down the left-field line produced Carolina's third and fourth runs of the inning, while Prosser scored himself on a Russ Adams single.
In the sixth, Cleveland had his third hit of the night, a leadoff single, and scored his career-high third run to push the Heels ahead 13-0.
Meanwhile, Manshack held the Flames scoreless until a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh gave Liberty its first two runs of the night and pulled the Flames to within 13-2. It was Manshack's second consecutive outing where he held an opponent scoreless into the seventh. In a 10-3 win last Wednesday against UNC Greensboro, Manshack shut out the Spartans until they notched two seventh-inning runs.
Liberty added two final runs in the eighth. Angel Ramos had a sacrifice fly and Erich Cloninger had an RBI single to provide the game's final scoring.
Cleveland finished the game 3-for-5, with one RBI and three runs, while Maples was 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Prosser (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) and Adams (2-for-5 1 RBI) also had big nights at the plate, while Adam Greenberg drew three walks and was 1-for-2, and Blake was 1-for-3 and was hit twice. Five different Tar Heels each notched a stolen base. Greenberg, the ACC's leader in stolen bases, tallied his 27th of the year.
Larry Wayne York (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Keith Butler (3-for-4) led Liberty with three hits apiece. Liberty starter Matt Stewart allowed six runs on four hits and four walks over 2.0 innings for the loss to fall to 2-2.
Carolina travels to UNC Wilmington Wednesday evening for a 7 p.m. game against the Seahawks. The Tar Heels then take the weekend off for exams and conclude the regular-season by hosting Georgia Tech, May 11-13.
