The University of North Carolina women's basketball team will open the 2001-02 season in the Preseason WNIT, hosting George Mason at Carmichael Auditorium on Nov. 9. The 16-team tournament continues with second-round games on Nov. 11, semifinal games on Nov. 14 or 15 and the championship game on Nov. 18 or 19. The tournament is a single-elimination format, with all games played at campus sites.
Other first-round matchups feature Connecticut vs. Fairfield, Florida International vs. Stephen F. Austin, Temple vs. Evansville, New Mexico vs. Pacific, Colorado vs. Oral Roberts, Oregon State vs. Loyola Marymount and Vanderbilt vs. Eastern Kentucky. A win over George Mason would put UNC in a second-round game against the winner of the Temple-Evansville matchup.
North Carolina and George Mason have met twice, with the Tar Heels winning both games. The most recent game came during the 1998-99 season, when UNC won 100-62 on Dec. 29, 1998, at Carmichael.
The 2001-02 Tar Heels return two starters -- Coretta Brown and Candace Sutton -- and six letterwinners from last year's 15-14 team. Joining the squad are five freshmen. Bringing the roster to a total of 12 players is senior guard Nikki Teasley, a three-year starter who sat out last season and will return to the team this fall for her senior campaign.
