North Carolina second baseman Russ Adams journeyed to the Cape Cod Summer Collegiate Baseball League as an athletic, but generally unknown player. He will return to Chapel Hill as the winner of the 2001 Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award, arguably the top honor from the most prestigious summer league in the country.
The rising junior from Laurinburg, N.C., is the subject of an upcoming ESPN The Magazine feature story by UNC alum Peter Gammons. (Gammons, incidentally, was on hand at Fenway Park to honor Adams and his fellow Cape League all-stars last month.) This all for a kid who almost never played college baseball. Adams was a four year starter at quarterback at Scotland County High School and almost attended school on a football scholarship.
The Cape Cod Times ran an excellent feature on Russ in their Sunday edition and you can read all about his exploits by clicking here.
