Midland, TX - Carolina Men's Tennis senior Trystan Meniane advanced to the quarterfinals of the Midland Collegiate Invitational with two straight set victories Friday afternoon. Ten teams are represented in the three day event, including four teams (UCLA, Pepperdine, Baylor and Stanford) which finished last season in the top 10 of the Omni Hotels/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Two other Tar Heels competing in the 32 player singles draw each faced nationally ranked opponents in their opening round singles matches. Nicholas Monroe lost to Texas A&M's Antie Matijevic, last season's Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, by a 6-4, 7-6 score. Andy Metzler lost a 6-4, 6-2 decision to the tournament's top seed, TCU's Toni Gordon, who is ranked among the nation's top 50 singles players.
Play was delayed by rain until midday, thus the Tar Heels still must play one round of consolation singles Friday evening. Monroe and Meniane are scheduled to begin play in the 16 team doubles draw on Saturday.
