CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore forward Anne Morrell's goal in the 84th minute gave the second-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Virginia Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. The Tar Heels improved to 13-1-2 on the season, 3-1 in the ACC, while Virginia fell to 7-5-2 (0-3).
Playing at home for the first time since Sept. 8, the Tar Heels trailed for much of the game. Virginia's Sarah Huffman put her team ahead in the 27th minute with a shot from 18 yards out, assisted by Meredith Rhodes. The Cavaliers, who have never beaten UNC in women's soccer, held on to the advantage for over 53 minutes, despite a number of scoring opportunities by Carolina. For the game, UNC outshot Virginia 14-5, 9-3 in the second half.
Junior forward Alyssa Ramsey scored the tying goal for Carolina in the 81st minute when she put back a shot by freshman Lindsay Tarpley that had rebounded off the crossbar. The goal was the 12 of the season for Ramsey, who leads the ACC in that category.
Just over three minutes later, the Tar Heels took the lead on Morrell's unassisted goal from 40 yards out on a pass from Tarpley. The score was Morrell's sixth of the year.
Senior Jenni Branam started in goal for UNC then watched most of the game while Aly Winget came off the bench to play 50:04. Branam came back in with 24:49 remaining and made two outstanding saves after UNC tied the game. She had another with under two minutes to play after UNC had taken the lead.
Carolina is now 3-1-1 this season after trailing at the half.
After playing six games in the first 19 days of this month, the Tar Heels get an eight-day break before playing again. Their next action is Oct. 27, when Carolina hosts Duke at Fetzer Field for an ACC matchup. Game time is 1 p.m.
