CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After three weeks of fall practice, the University of North Carolina softball team will face tough in-state competition Saturday when it hosts the Carolina Fall Classic at the UNC Softball Complex. Joining UNC in the field are Charlotte, East Carolina and UNC Wilmington.
The first game of the day begins at 9 a.m. and the final one will start at 7 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
"I'm looking forward to seeing how well we take what we've worked on in practice out onto the field," said UNC coach Donna Papa, who is in her 18th year at UNC, her 20th as a head coach. "It will be a great opportunity to evaluate where we are and see where we need work."
Saturday's action will be the first in Tar Heel uniforms for six freshmen - Crystal Cox, Michelle Hoffmann, Jaclyn Holden, Tiffany Stewart, Megan Welch and Alison Yin. Also new to the team is junior Jessica Graziano, a transfer from Maryland-Baltimore County.
"When it comes to the new players, these games are a great chance to see how they respond to certain game situations and also to see how we all work together as a unit," Papa said.
The Tar Heels will play another fall game on Oct. 10, meeting Louisburg College in Wilson, N.C. The nine-inning game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Southern Nash High School, the alma mater of senior catcher Anna Tharrington.
