Tar Heels Clinch ACC Regular Season Title With 1-1 Tie Against Terps

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -?? The second-ranked North Carolina women?s soccer team clinched its 12th Atlantic Coast Conference championship in the last 15 years Friday night as the Tar Heels fought to a 1-1 tie with 23rd-ranked Maryland before 1,266 fans on a chilly night at Fetzer Field. In the process UNC set a school record for tied games in a season.
Anne Morrell scored a goal for Carolina in the 14th minute of the match which was countered by Lindsay Givens of Maryland in the 48th minute. The two teams then played 62:08 of scoreless soccer after Givens? goal before the match ended in a tie. It was the first non-loss for Maryland in the history of its series against UNC.
UNC, playing its regular season finale, is now 14-1-4 overall and 4-1-2 in the ACC. UNC has won the ACC regular season championship every season since the league began play in 1988 with the exception of 1988, 1994 and 2000. UNC will be the top seed in the ACC Tournament beginning next Thursday in Tallahasse, Fla. With the tie, the #23 Terps, coached by UNC alumna Shannon Higgins Cirovski, finishes its regular season 11-6-1, 3-3-1 in the ACC. Morrell got UNC on the board at 13:32 when she scored on a give and go in the box off an assist by Lindsay Tarpley. Givens got the tying goal at 47:52 when her long throw in accidently deflected off UNC midfielder Anne Felts as she stood on the goal line, caroming into the goal.
UNC has now played more tie games in the 2002 season than any other season in school history. The previous high was three ties in 1988 when UNC was 18-0-3.
UNC outshot the Terrapins 19-4 and had nine corner kicks to four for the Terps. Kristen Barnhill played all 110 minutes in goal for Maryland, making seven saves. Jenni Branam, who suffered a cut on her forehead in the second half, and had to leave the game for stitches, played 34:38 and had two saves and Aly Winget came off the bench and made five saves for UNC.
