TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Second-ranked North Carolina played one of its most complete matches of the season Thursday evening as the Tar Heels defeated Wake Forest 3-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Carolina will face the winner of Thursday's final quarterfinal game between #4 seed Florida State and #5 seed Maryland in the tournament semifinals Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
The Tar Heels got a pair of goals from freshman midfielder Lindsay Tarpley and a goal from senior forward Susan Bush to blank the Deacons and in the process improve their all-time ACC Tournament record to 36-0-1. UNC has won 35 straight ACC Tournament matches since tying NC State in the 1988 Tournament.
The tournament's top seed after winning the ACC regular season championship with a 4-1-2 record, the Tar Heels faced the eighth-seeded Demon Deacons who finished 2-4-1 in the league. The teams had played just eight days ago in Winston-Salem, N.C. with UNC winning 3-2 despite being outshot by Wake Forest 19-14.
On Thursday, however, the Tar Heels came out and took care of business early. Just 7:45 into the match Bush scored her third goal of the season, assisted by junior forward Alyssa Ramsey. It was Ramsey's fourth assist of the season. Ramsey sent a cross from the left side into the box where Bush ran onto the ball and finished easily past Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan. The goal would be the eventual game-winner, Bush's first of the year.
Shortly before halftime the Tar Heels extended their lead to 2-0 as Tarpley scored the first of her two goals and her 12th goal of the campaign overall. Sophomore midfielder Mary McDowell sent a ball into the box from the right side and Tarpley finished the play into the left side of the goal at 40:16. McDowell earned her fifth assist of the season on the goal.
After outshooting the Demon Deacons 7-2 in the first half, the Tar Heels dominated defensively even more in the second half with a 9-1 shot margin. Tarpley scored her 13th goal of the season at 59:27. From 25 yards out on the left side she sent a shot to the far post going upper corner to beat Regan for the final margin. Tar Heel junior forward Alyssa Ramsey assisted on the goal, her second assist of the game and sixth of the season.
UNC ended up outshooting the Demon Deacons 16-3 for the game and the Tar Heels had four corner kicks to zero for Wake Forest. Jenni Branam played all 90 minutes in goal for UNC for the first time since the Southern California game on September 1. She faced only three Wake Forest shots, none on goal. Regan played 65:49 for Wake, allowing all three goals and making three saves. Kenna Healy played 24:11 in goal for Wake, making one save.
UNC improved to 15-1-4 overall on the season with the victory while the Demon Deacons fell to 12-7-1 on the campaign.
