GAINESVILLE, Ga. - North Carolina's novice rowers took the top two spots in the women's novice eight collegiate/club race Saturday at the Head of the Hooch regatta on Lake Lanier. Racing in a field of 41 boats, UNC's A boat won in 21:24.3 and UNC's B boat came in second in 21:38.7.
"Both boats rowed very strong, controlled, focused races," said UNC novice coach Laura Fogt. "They did everything we asked them to do: go out there and pull hard, race hard and come across the finish line first and second. I'm very excited about their performance."
Saturday's competition was the first on the collegiate level for all of UNC's novice rowers and coxswains, most of whom had never participated in the sport before trying out for the Carolina team this fall.
Racing in the UNC A boat were Lauren Portnow (coxswain), Kristin McPhillips, Emily Dondero, Susan Fisk, Claire Young, Jenny Cox, Maggie Leturno, Sarah Stargel, and Leah Shissias.
In the UNC B boat were Caroline Jacobini (coxswain), Sarah Hayter, Amanda Snow, Alicia Stokes, Maggie O'Brien, Laura Haythorn, Claire Bramble, Olivia Reid, and Clara Leigh.
The UNC men's club team continued the successful day for Tar Heel boats at the Head of the Hooch. Carolina took first, third and fifth in the men's novice eight, first in the men's club four and third in the men's championship four.
The Tar Heel novice women will race again on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va.
