Tar Heels Open Spring Racing Season

CHAPEL HILL , N.C. - The North Carolina women's rowing team staged its only home competition of the season on Saturday morning, hosting Duke at University Lake for the Carolina Dash. In cool, misty conditions, the Blue Devils came away with wins in every race.
The teams competed on a 1,000-meter course, with each boat racing three times. The closest race of the day was in the first heat of the Second Varsity 8, in which the Duke boat beat Carolina by less than a second.
"We didn't get the results that we wanted, but we rowed the way we needed to row right now," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We have a couple of missing pieces, some that we already knew about and some that we recognized today. That's the good thing about an early race like this."
Both of Carolina's novice boats competed one level higher than the norm. The Tar Heel Novice 8 raced in the Second Varsity 8 race and UNC's Second Novice 8 raced against Duke's Novice 8.
"The novices really stepped up to the challenge," Haney said. "In the Second Varsity 8 race, our Novice 8 held its own and that was really impressive. We knew they were fast, so we wanted to see what they could do in a race like this. The Second Novice 8 had a tough race, too, and did really well.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the performance. It pinpoints what we need to work on for the spring racing season."
The action was the first of the spring for UNC and the first of the school year for the varsity squad. Next up for the Tar Heels is a March 12 race against Clemson and Notre Dame in Clemson, S.C.
