Carolina Dominates Sharpie Open

Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team hosted the Sharpie-Carolina open today and provided the home fans with some real excitement. The Tar Heels appeared in seven of the 10 championship bouts, winning five of them. There were no team scores recorded in the tournament.
Two freshmen, Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) and David Dashiell (Chesapeake, Va.) made the championship matches at 141 and 197 pounds, respectively. Baglio took out Virginia's Bob Siedel with a 2-0 victory, while Dashiell fell in overtime to Cornell's Matt Greenberg. Senior Jimmy O'Connor (Woodbine, Md.) earned first place in the 165-pound weight division with a sudden victory over Princeton's Ryan Bonfiglio. Sophomore Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) took first place with a convincing 7-0 edge over Cornell's Alejandro Alvarez.
Sophomore Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) fell in the final of the 125-pound wight division to Cornell's Travis Lee, 8-6 sudden victory. Lee and Rodrigues are both ranked in the top eight in their respective weight classes, Lee No. 4 and Rodrigues No. 8 (InterMat Rankings). Senior Chris DiGuiseppe (Holland, Pa.) also made it to the finals but fell short as Cornell's Dustin Mannotti defeated him 8-5.
Graduate Matt Kenny won the heavyweight division with a sudden victory over UVA's Josh Etu, 3-2, who upset UNC's Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.) in the semifinals, 2-1 TB.
Other champions in the open tournament were UVA's Tim Foley, 6-5 over Cornell's Gabe Wester at 157 pounds, Appalachian State's Mark Fee at 174 pounds (5-2 over Citadel's Keith Clifton) and Cornell's Clint Wattenberg over ASU's Shawn McIntosh.
Carolina has three weeks off until the Reno Invitational on Dec. 19. The tournament will host five teams in the Top 25.
