McCants had 25 points on 10 of 15 shooting against second-ranked Kansas and added 18 points in the championship game against Stanford. He led all scorers in both games.
Other nominees:
Senior Jimmy O'Connor won his first championship of this young season with a 8-6 sudden victory over Princeton's Ryan Bonfiglio. He defeated Virginia's Will Durkee, 5-1, in the semi's and downed Duquesne's ill Boeh, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. O'Connor was one of three Tar Heels to win their respective weight classes at the Sharpie Open. He ended the tournament 4-0.
Coretta Brown and Candace Sutton were both named to the all-tournament team at the Rainbow Wahine Women's Basketball Classic. The Tar Heels went 2-1 in Hawaii.
ACC Basketball Player of the Week:
Rashad McCants, North Carolina 6-3, 190, Freshman, Asheville, N.C.
North Carolina freshman Rashad McCants was tabbed as the ACC Basketball Player of the Week after being named the Most Valuable Player of the Preseason NIT after leading UNC to wins over #2 Kansas and Stanford. McCants was the leading scorer in both games - 25 vs. Kansas and 18 vs. Stanford while hitting on 17 for 26 from the floor, three-for-six from three-point field goal range and six-of-eight from the free throw line in the two games. McCants leads the ACC in scoring with a 21.2 points per game average.
