North Carolina Head Coach Matt Doherty
"I thought our effort was good tonight. I can't fault our effort at all. I was proud of the way the guys responded after a tough loss to Wake Forest."
"I thought the fan support was again fantastic. We'll just keep knocking on the door and hopefully we'll get a win here soon."
"Maryland's a great team, a well-oiled machine with great experience."
"Jawad's effort was great. It might have been his best game. I'm not just talking about points. He had three offensive rebounds, 11 total, along with five assists and one turnover. I really think Jawad's been growing as a player. It's exciting to see. He did some good things. And some other guys did some good things as well."
On UNC's second half performance...
"At this point in the season, to come back and play with heart and show some fight, I'm proud of our guys. That's a start, you have to have that. If you don't have that, you aren't going to win. We showed some heart, we showed some spark, we put up a fight and we just lost to a very talented and well-coached team."
Freshman forward Jawad Williams on the game...
"We played hard. We gave it our best shot. They played pretty well and they won the game. We can't [only play one good half]. We have put together a full game and come out with a victory. We can't take [the outcome] as a moral victory, but we're proud of our effort. We went out there and played hard, we never dropped our heads. We continued to fight, and that's all you can ask for against a great team like that."
Williams on his performance against Maryland...
"I just went out and played. [Jason] Capel got in foul trouble and I had to step up my game. I had to make something happen, and I guess it worked out. I was his back-up, and I had to do what I had to do."
Senior center Kris Lang on the game...
"What I'm proud of is the fans that supported us. Even when we lost the game they cheered for us as we came off the court. The big thing is our guys played hard. They didn't quit, and that's all you can ask for -- just to play hard and have fun. That's something we did. We had fun, though some things didn't go our way and we just didn't come out with the win."
Lang on running set plays tonight...
"We didn't [run any set plays]. We just wanted to play motion offense. We call it three-game. We just pass and cut and screen -- that's it. No secondary, no plays, almost like street basketball."
Lang on Jawad Williams' performance...
"Jawad took another step forward to becoming a great player. He's already a very good player, and I believe today he is going to get the recognition on the fact that he is a great player. He's a great athlete, he's very fundamental -- pump fakes, one-dribble jump shot. The man is just developing an all-around game. He's becoming very dangerous."
