Softball splits games on the final day of Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C.- The University of North Carolina softball team split its final two games at the Triangle Classic Sunday against Illinois and Minnesota. The Tar Heels beat Illinois 5-2 in their first game, moving them to the final game of the Gold Bracket against Minnesota, and lost their second 7-0. The Tar Heels moved to 5-5 and took home second place in the tournament.
At Walnut Creek park, the Tar Heels fell behind early in ther first game, as Illinois scored in the top of the first inning. Lindsey Hamma walked, then stole second, and was moved over to third on a ground out by Erin Jones. She then scored on a passed ball.
The Tar Heels scored the first of their five runs in the second inning and scored two each in the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Jessica Young hit a lead-off home run in the second inning to tie the game. In the fourth inning, pinch runner Lauren Looper scored on a single by Freshman Ashley Allen. The second run came as Dionne Streete scored on an error by Illinois. In the fifth inning, Junior Tiffany Tolleson doubled to center field and was brought home on a double by Junior Quinn Porter. After Porter advanced to third on a groundout, Senior Natalie Anter doubled to center field and brought Porter in to score. Tolleson went two for three in the game with a double, single, sac. bunt and two stoelen bases. Senior Shannon Walsh picked up her third win of the season, giving up just two hits in seven innings and striking out six batters.
In the championship game of the Gold Bracket, the Tar Heels faced Minnesota. Minnesota took an early lead over the Tar Heels as they scored one run in the second and third innings. In the fifth inning, the Golden Gophers scored 5 runs. Junior Angie Recknor picked up the win and struck out three Tar Heels. In their five games in tournament play, Minnesota only allowed three runs by their opponents.
For the Tar Heels, Tolleson went two for two in the game with two singles. Shannon Walsh struck out four batters and recorded her third loss of the season.
