TONIGHT'S GAME: NC State
* The Tar Heels take to the road to face NC State on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Raleigh. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
* Jason Capel is the only forward (or center) among the top 15 players in the ACC in assists. He ranks 11th in the conference with 3.14 assists per game.
* With its loss at Virginia on Feb. 12, Carolina (now 7-17 in 2001-02) set a new school record for most losses in a season. UNC lost 15 games in both 1950-51 and 1951-52.
* With its loss to Maryland on Feb. 10, Carolina (now 3-10 in the ACC) set a new school record with its ninth ACC loss of the season. UNC went 6-8 in ACC play in 1963-64, Dean Smith's third year as Carolina head coach.
* This year, the Tar Heels are 10 games under .500 in a season for the first time in school history. Prior to this season, UNC had never been six games under .500 at any point.
* Carolina is 1-7 on the road this season with the lone win coming at Clemson on Jan. 27.
* After Sunday's game, Carolina will close out its regular season at home against Clemson on Wednesday and at Duke next Sunday.
The Series with the Wolfpack
* Carolina leads the all-time series with NC State, 128-71. Despite a Wolfpack win in Chapel Hill earlier this season on Jan. 23, the Tar Heels have won seven of the last eight games in the series.
* Overall, UNC is 50-41 against NC State in Raleigh.
* The Tar Heels are 2-0 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena, having defeated the Pack on their new home court in each of the last two seasons.
* In 2000, Carolina outrebounded NC State, 46-31, and outscored the Wolfpack, 40-18, in the paint to pick up a 70-62 win at the ESA. The game marked State's first loss on their new home court after starting its initial season there 14-0.
* In 2001, Brendan Haywood connected on a pair of free throws with 1:17 to play and blocked a potential game-tying three-pointer from the corner with 49 seconds to play to preserve a 60-52 Carolina win over NC State at the ESA.
* Carolina has won five consecutive games against NC State in games played in Raleigh. The Tar Heels won their last three games in Reynolds Coliseum and are 2-0 in the Entertainment and Sports Arena. UNC now has won five in a row at NC State for the first time since it won five straight in Raleigh from 1967-71.
LAST GAME: Ohio
Ohio shot 63.3 percent from the floor in the second half and defeated Carolina, 86-78, in the Smith Center on Feb. 20. The Bobcats led by as many as 18 points with 6:08 remaining in the second half before the Tar Heels went on a 17-2 run to cut the lead to 73-70 with 2:08 left to play. Carolina ran out of gas from that point on, never getting within four points the rest of the way as Ohio grabbed an eight-point win.
Melvin Scott led Carolina with 17 points (tying his season high) and hit a season-high five three-pointers. Jawad Williams overcame a sore right ankle (sprained in the previous game vs. Florida State) and scored 15 second-half points to help spur the comeback. Kris Lang had 15 for Carolina.
Ohio's starting frontcourt outscored UNC's starting frontcourt, 55-31, and out-rebounded it, 24-13.
Tar Heels Tops in Merchandising - Again
Carolina led over 180 universities nationwide in licensing revenues for the second half of 2001, the Collegiate Licensing Co. announced last week. According to UNC director of auxiliary services Rut Tufts, Carolina's revenues from July to December 2001 were $1.8 million, up 11 percent from $1.6 million for the same period in 2000.
Seventy-five percent of the net revenue is used for general scholarships on campus and 25 percent goes to the athletic department.
