CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got four goals and one assist from senior midfielder Lindsay Stone and three goals and one assist from senior midfielder Kellie Thompson to rally past seven-time defending national champion Maryland in the second half, going on for a 13-11 win over the Terps at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
The sixth-ranked Tar Heels trailed 7-5 early in the second half against the #1 Terps before going on a 6-1 scoring run to take control of the game at 11-8. In that scoring run the Tar Heels got two goals each from Stone and Thompson. The win over Maryland, Carolina's fourth against the Terps in the past five seasons and its third straight regular-season win over the Terrapins in Chapel Hill, moved UNC to 3-0 on the season, 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland started the season with a 9-8 loss at second-ranked Duke on Friday night and is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the ACC.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first half just 11:32 into the contest as Stone scored her first two goals. But Carolina could not maintain the momentum and Terps played like the national champions they are to outscore UNC 5-1 the rest of the half for a 6-5 Terp advantage. Katie Robinson, Kelly Coppedge and Annie Collins had goals for the Terps in the final six minutes of the first half to give the Terps the lead. Collins' goal came with three seconds remaining in the first half on a free position shot.
Hobbs opened the second half for the Terrapins with a goal at the 31 second mark but back to back goals by Stone and by senior midfielder Christine McPike, who had three on the day, in the next 30 seconds tied the game at 7-7. After Maryland retook the lead at 8-7 on a goal by Acacia Walker in the fourth minute of the second half, UNC responded with a goal by Stone and then an unassisted tally by sophomore attacker Brooke Young that gave the Tar Heels the lead for good at 7:37 of the second half.
That lead grew to as much as 13-9 on Thompson's third goal of the game with 7:57 to play before Maryland cut into the final margin with late goals by Kelly Coppedge, her third and fourth scores of the game.
Coppedge had four goals for the Maryland side but she was the only Terp to tally more than one goal. Courtney Hobbs had one goal and two assists for the Terps. Young finished with one goal and two assists for UNC while senior attacker Erin McInnes added two goals and two assists.
Maryland outshot the Tar Heels 30-21 but UNC won the draw controls 15-11, including a 9-5 margin in the second half when the Tar Heels took control of the game.
Katelyn Hoffman made seven saves in goal for UNC and Alexis Venechanos made six for the Maryland Terrapins.
The Tar Heels will be idle until Friday when they host Loyola at 6 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Maryland plays next Sunday at Syracuse at 1 p.m.
