Baseball Rolls Past Davidson, 9-2

CHAPEL HILL - No. 21 North Carolina cruised past Davidson, 9-2, Wednesday evening in non-conference baseball action at Boshamer Stadium. Scott Manshack (4-0) matched his career high with eight strikeouts and allowed just one earned run while walking none over six innings for the win, as UNC improved to 24-11 overall. Davidson has dropped four straight and is 13-21 overall.
"Scott had good command and he was around the plate most of the night," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "He made some really good pitches and he looked confident."
Adam Greenberg hit his first career grand slam and was 2-for-4 with with three runs scored. Greg Mangum (3-for-4), Russ Adams (2-for-4), Chris Maples (2-for-2) and Ryan Blake (2-for-4) also had big nights at the plate for UNC. Maples took the mound in the eighth and struck out two of the five batters he faced.
Davidson scored one run in both the first and second innings, but UNC answered with a pair of runs in the first and went ahead for good on Greenberg's second inning grand slam.
Maples singled and scored in the fifth to extend the Carolina lead to 7-2, while his sixth inning RBI single capped the scoring for UNC. Adams also drove in a run in the sixth, knocking in Greenberg from first base on his second triple of the game and third of the season.
Adams notched his 37th steal of the season and the 85th of his career to pass B.J. Surhoff and move into third place in steals all-time at UNC. Greenberg stole two bases for the 18th different time of his career and ranks fifth all-time at UNC with 81.
Davidson used eight different pitchers in the game, but starter Mark Wells (3-5) took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits in two innings.
Carolina welcomes top-ranked Clemson to Chapel Hill for three games this weekend. Game times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Please note, Saturday's 3 p.m. start is a change from Carolina's originally scheduled first pitch.
