CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina opened a three-game ACC baseball series versus NC State with a 10-2 win over the Wolfpack Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium. The 21st-ranked Tar Heels, who jumped on top 8-0 after three innings, pounded out 15 hits in improving to 26-14, 11-5 in the ACC. NC State drops to 25-15, 4-9 in the league.
Adam Greenberg doubled twice and homered to finish 3-for-5 with five RBIs, while Ron Braun was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Russ Adams, Sean Farrell and Greg Mangum all had two hits apiece for the Tar Heels. Meanwhile, Carolina starter Scott Autrey pitched seven strong innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. Autrey allowed just two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out four and walking one.
"Scott pitched well enough tonight for us to get a win," UNC head coach Mike Fox said. "We got him some runs, which helps. We needed to get seven innings out of him, which we did. I thought he started to struggle a little bit in the middle innings, but he was strong in the sixth and seventh."
The Tar Heels did their damange in the second and third innings with two outs to jump on top 8-0. Braun and Mangum hit back-to-back RBI doubles for a 2-0 lead and Greenberg hit a two-run home run, his 11th homer of the season, to right for a 4-0 advantage. Carolina capitalized on a two-out error by NC State shortstop Chad Orvella in the third for four unearned runs. Braun singled home Chris Iannetta, Mangum doubled in Chad Prosser and Greenberg drove in another pair of runs with a double down the right field line for the eight-run lead.
NC State scratched back with a run on a passed ball in the fourth and a solo home run from Sammy Esposito, one of just five Wolfpack hits on the night, in the fifth to pull within 8-2.
Greenberg drove in his fifth run of the game in the seventh on a double and Russ Adams singled him home to cap the scoring at 10-2.
Wolfpack starter Daniel Caldwell allowed eight runs on 10 hits over three innings to fall to 6-5.
Carolina and NC State continue their three-game series with games Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Following Saturday's game, fans are invited to stay and watch the Academy Award winning film Shrek on UNC's state-of-the-art video board in left field.
