CHAPEL HILL - Freshman pitcher Garry Bakker was named ACC Player of the Week after throwing a complete game shutout on March 30 at Virginia. Bakker, a right-hander from Sloatsburg, N.Y., scattered five hits and struck out a career-high 13 batters while walking one in leading the Tar Heels to a 5-0 win over the Cavaliers.
akker became the first UNC freshman to throw a complete game shutout since 1984 with his effort at UVa. It was also the first complete game and the most strikeouts by a UNC pitcher this season.
akker is 3-1 and leads UNC's starters with a 2.29 ERA. He is the second straight Tar Heel to garner conference Player of the Week honors after third baseman Chris Maples did so last week.
