CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina center fielder Adam Greenberg has been named the co-ACC Player of the Week after helping lead the Tar Heels to their first sweep of conference rival NC State since 1990. The junior from Guilford, Conn., batted .556 (10-for-18) in four games last week with five runs scored, four doubles, two home runs, nine RBIs and two stolen bases.
Greenberg batted .643 (9-for-14) in the three-game series against NC State with multiple hits in each game. Greenberg is currently on a five-game hitting streak and, over his last eight games, is batting 16-for-34 (.471) with 11 runs scored, three home runs, 15 RBIs and five stolen bases.
Greenberg has started 160 of UNC's 162 games over the past three seasons and is among UNC's leaders in nearly all offensive categories in 2002, including batting average (.347, 2nd), hits (59, T-1st), runs (51, 2nd), home runs (12, 2nd), doubles (15, T-1st), steals (27, 2nd) and RBIs (42, 3rd). He became UNC's all-time triples leader with the 15th of his career in the fifth inning of the March 26 win over Towson and he ranks fifth all-time at UNC with 172 runs.
Greenberg shares this week's honor with Wake Forest's Nick Blue, who hit 12-for-16 (.750) last week for the Demon Deacons. Greenberg is the third Tar Heel this season to be honored as an ACC Player of the Week. Chris Maples (March 25) and Garry Bakker (April 1) have also been recognized by the league.
