The Vince Carter Summer Jam is an event the Toronto Raptors star's Embassy of Hope Foundation launched in Canada in 2001. The weeklong event includes basketball activities for kids with a focus on education. With the Canadian event generating over $500,000 for children's charities in Ontario, Vince and his mother, Michelle, have decided to launch the U.S. Vince Carter Summer Slam.
Michelle Carter serves as the Executive Director of the Embassy of Hope Foundation. The Vince Carter Summer Slam U.S. will take place July 8-14, 2002, in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Former University of North Carolina head coach Dean Smith has confirmed his attendance at the summer's events. "Coach Smith has been very supportive of his former players and their charitable efforts," says Michelle Carter.
The week's activities include three kids components: the Vince Carter Youth Basketball Academy for boys and girls will run from July 8-12; the Vince Carter Beach Exposure Workout will be July 9&10 and will give boys grades 9-12 the opportunity to play in front of national college coaches; the annual Fleer Kids Day will take place on July 12 with an interactive basketball theme park featuring the NBA's Read to Achieve Program.
"The event is very unique" says Vince Carter, the Toronto Raptors alltime leading scorer, "because it allows me to have an impact on 600 to 800 kids in one week while generating significant revenues for others!"
The Vince Carter Summer Slam beneficiaries include the Children's Home Society of Florida, Halifax Hospital's Speediatrics program and the Vince Carter Embassy of Hope Foundation and its *Believing in Your Dreams' scholarship.
