The Carolina baseball team has begun its annual fall practice season, and TarHeelBlue.com was on the scene to get pictures of the action.
"Practice has been going great," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "The fall is always fun. There's always a spark."
The Tar Heels, 43-21 a year ago, return several standouts from the record-setting 2002 season, including seniors Ryan Blake, Sean Farrell and Chad Prosser. Farrell is Carolina's top returning hitter after batting .354 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs in a standout junior season.
Garry Bakker, Daniel Moore and Scott Manshack, all of whom won at least six games last year, return as UNC's top starting pitchers, while Cape Cod League All-Star Whitley Benson, Michael Gross and Kevin Brower will provide relief work for a solid pitching staff in 2003.
"It's great to be able to evaluate and teach," Fox said. "I'm glad we have a fall program, so we're going to utilize all 32 days we have. I'm excited and I think our players are too."
Carolina holds its first two scrimmages of the fall this Friday and Saturday. The Tar Heels conclude their work on the field in mid October with their annual Fall World Series.
