CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The University of North Carolina men's golf team won this year's Franklin Street Partners Invitational on Sunday after being in first place all weekend. In the final round, the Tar Heels shot a one-over-par 289 for an 875 total and a four-stroke victory.
"We really played well at the end and that was the difference," said Carolina Head Coach John Inman. "We were in a dead heat after fifteen holes today with Georgia Southern and we played just a little bit better than they did coming down the stretch."
Georgia Southern finished in second place, four strokes behind Carolina. Georgia Southern, which was tied with Carolina after the first round and one shot back after the second, shot a final round four-over 292 for an 879 total. Kentucky finished in third place after shooting a 25-over 303 for a 30-over 894 total.
In the individual race, Tar Heel senior Dustin Bray finished in a tie for first place with Alabama's Lars Brovold. Bray started the final round in fifth place, but shot his best score of the weekend (69) for a three-under 213 total.
"When you're seven shots down, you don't really think about trying to win," said Bray. "I was just trying to come out here and have a solid round and to help my team by shooting a low number so we could pull this team championship out."
Carolina sophomore Ted Smith finished tied for third with Georgia Southern's Toshi Hirata with a two-under 214. Carolina freshman Will Dottley finished tied for sixth at two-over 218.
In the women's championship, Duke handily won the Franklin Street Partners Invitational after leading the field of nine all weekend. The team carded below par scores in all three rounds (279-285-286) for a total 14-under-par 850. With all five players finishing in the top five, Duke had motivation to stay focused.
"Having a big lead could be a negative if you didn't have everyone at the top competing against each other," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "They were all wanting to win it individually."
Duke's Leigh Anne Hardin and Liz Janangelo tied for first place in the individual race. Both were the only two who finished with total scores under par at seven-under 209. Hardin had the best third round of the women's field at four-under 68.
"It's tough (competing with a teammate), but you figure the better you do individually, the better you do for your team," said Hardin. "You really just take care of yourself, then come in and add the scores up and that's kind of how we all think about it."
Janangelo, last year's medalist, lead the individual race after both the first and second rounds. She carded a one-under 71 on Sunday.
"There is no better person to compete with than a teammate," said Janangelo. "If you're going to get in a tie, you want it to be someone on your team."
Behind the Duke team, Florida finished in second place, 49 strokes behind the Blue Devils. The Gators finished the third round with a 26-over 304 for a 35-over 899 total. Auburn and Tennessee tied for third with a 42-over 906 total.
Carolina women's team finished eighth after carding a 301-312-304 for a 53-over 917 total.
""I think what we can take away is the learning experience," said Carolina Head Coach Sally Austin. "It's not about ball striking, its course management and playing the game and getting the ball in the hole. Every time you go out, you can learn something.
Carolina seniors Meaghan Francella and Ashley Prange both moved up in the standings on the final day. Francella finished in fourth place with her best round of the tournament, a one-under 71, for a three-over 219 total. Prange finished tied for fifth at four-over 220 after shooting a final-round one-over 73.
Other Tar Heel finishes include freshman Katie Miller in 33rd with a 22-over 238, freshman Shannon Boyle tied for 37th with a 27-over 243 and sophomore Romi Irons in 42nd with a 32-over 248.
On the men's side, Carolina sophomore Kevin Silva finished tied for 20th at 14-over 230 and sophomore Fernando Figueroa finished tied for 44th at 34-over 250.
The Franklin Street Partners Invitational features a men's and women's championship with all 18 teams (nine men's and nine women's) simultaneously playing the same course. The tournament was played at UNC's Finley Golf Course, a par-72, 6,285-yard course for the ladies and a par-72, 7,199-yard course for the men.
