CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four Tar Heel players scored in double figures Friday night as the No. 14 North Carolina women's basketball team opened the 2003-04 season with an 80-44 win over St. Francis (Pa.) at Carmichael Auditorium.
UNC (1-0) was led by freshman forward Camille Little, who turned in a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Ivory Latta added 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The Tar Heels got 16 points and nine rebounds from senior center Candace Sutton, and 14 points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward La'Tangela Atkinson.
"It's good to have our young players contributing the way they are," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "I thought we looked good at times, but other times we were sloppy. It was a good team effort, and I thought both freshmen did a nice job in their first real college game."
Junior center Beth Swink led the Red Flash (0-1) with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Also in double figures was junior forward Christin Black with 11 points.
The Tar Heels shot 41.8 percent for the game to 22.2 by St. Francis and outrebounded the visitors 56-41. With the win, Carolina is 18-0 when opening the season at home.
"You can't come to North Carolina and shoot 22 percent and expect to be in the game," said first-year St. Francis coach Jill Poe, who made her head coaching debut. "Carolina is a very good team. They shot the ball well and pressured us and we had a lot of inconsistency."
The win was UNC's 300th at Carmichael Auditorium, which the Tar Heels have called home since the start of the varsity program in 1974-75. Carolina is 300-81 on the Carmichael court.
UNC is back in action on Sunday when the Tar Heels host Hofstra for a 2 p.m. game at Carmichael. St. Francis stays in the area to play at UNC Greensboro on Sunday. That tipoff is also 2 p.m.
