NEWS AND NOTES
With the victory over Delaware State on Thursday, Carolina has now won six consecutive opening day games.
Seton Hall took two of three games against the Tar Heels in 2002, but with its sweep of the Pirates this weekend, Carolina is now 36-10 all time against Seton Hall. The Tar Heels showed their versatility as a team, winning game 1 thanks to powerful hitting, game 2 with dominant pitching and game 3 with a dramatic come from behind team effort in their last at-bat.
Carolina's starting pitching has been phenomenal through the first four games of the season. Scott Manshack, Daniel Moore, Garry Bakker and Bo Dickerson combined to pitch 21.0 innings while allowing just three earned runs on just 16 hits and striking out 18. Manshack, Moore and Bakker all collected their first victories of the season in their starts.
In 2002, UNC set nine new team records for offensive categories. As a team, the Tar Heels are off to another hot start, with a .384 batting average and 50 runs scored on 53 hits during the four game week.
TOP PERFORMERS
Jeremy Cleveland had 8 hits in 13 at bats for a .615 average. He scored six runs and had one home run and four RBIs.
Sammy Hewitt made an immediate impact in his first games as a Tar Heel. He batted .571 on the week with two doubles, one triple, one home run, six RBIs and seven runs scored.
Scott Manshack opened up the season for Carolina with six strong innings in which he gave up just three hits and no earned runs while striking out seven Delaware State batters. He finished the 2002 season with a perfect 7-0 record and has now won his last eight decisions. Manshack is scheduled to be Wednesday's starter against Richmond's first team All-American pitcher, Tim Stauffer.
