CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (5-0) defeated Appalachian State (0-6) 10-6 on a cold, cloudy Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. With this win, the Tar Heels remain undefeated on the 2003 season. UNC coaches designated this as a staff game and used six pitchers in the victory. Carolina's offense was sparked by junior Jeremy Cleveland who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Freshman Adam Kalkhof pitched 4.1 innings and gave up just two runs while striking out seven and collecting the win in his first career start.
Carolina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chad Prosser reached on an infield single to lead off the inning and Justin Webb followed with a walk. Appalachian State pitcher Taylor Craig then retired Sean Farrell and Chris Iannetta but with two outs, Cleveland crushed a three-run home run to left, his second home run of the season.
Wes Moyer helped extend the Tar Heel lead by picking up his eighth RBI on a double in the bottom of the second inning which scored Sammy Hewitt, last week's ACC Player of the Week.
Appalachian State got on the board with two runs in the fourth. After loading the bases thanks to two singles and error, the Mountaineers scored their first run when designated hitter Derek Smith was hit by a pitch. Tim Johnson then walked to force in another run, but with the bases still loaded, Kalkhof struck out Clint Johns and Brad Peisel to end the threat.
The Tar Heels added to their lead by scoring runs in every inning except the sixth. Cleveland homered again with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give Carolina a 10-3 lead.
The Mountaineers struck for three runs on three hits in the top of the ninth but it was not enough to overcome Carolina's lead.
Carolina's game against Richmond on Wednesday has been postponed indefinitely. The Tar Heels return to action this weekend in Myrtle Beach for the Broadway at the Beach Tournament. UNC will face Michigan State on Friday at noon, St. John's on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 3 p.m.
