
No. 4 Virginia Outlasts No. 12 Carolina In Overtime At ACC Tournament.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - The No. 2 seeded Virginia Cavaliers beat No. 3 seeded North Carolina 13-12 in overtime Friday evening in the 2003 ACC Tournament semifinals at Kolckner Stadium to advance to the ACC Championship game Sunday against Duke at 3:00 pm. Billy Glading's overtime goal was the winning score for Virginia with 1:40 left in the first overtime period. Freshman Scott Falatach was the star for UNC with four goals and one assist. He helped spur a Carolina comeback which saw the Tar Heels score three straight goals in the final 2:25 of regulation to send the game to overtime.
The 12th-ranked Tar Heels lost their fourth match in a row and fell to 5-6 on the season. North Carolina has played in tougher luck than any team in college lacrosse this season, losing six games by a total of 10 goals, including three overtimes losses amongst which were setbacks to No. 1 Johns Hopkins and No. 4 Virginia. The Cavaliers have won three straight and are 8-2 on the season.
Carolina bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the first period before Virginia came surging back with six straight goals. The three UNC goals were scored by Kyle Bell, Lance Zimmerman, and Austin Garrison. Virginia followed up with three goals from John Christmas, and one each from Chris Rotelli, Billy Glading and Jack deVillers. Carolina scored two of the last three goals of the first half and trailed 7-5 at the break.
The Tar Heels had the momentum coming out of halftime as they scored two straight goals. Freshman Scott Falatach scored his third goal of the evening and sophomore Mike McCall added another as North Carolina tied the score at 7-7. Virginia's Joe Yevoli scored his first goal of the night and freshman Kyle Dixon followed with another tally to put the Cavaliers back up by two. North Carolina's Bryant Will added the last score of the third period by hitting the back of the net with 1:10 left on the clock.
The Cavaliers three of the first four goals of the fourth quarter before North Carolina scored three straight goals to end the fourth period and send the game into overtime. Mike McCall, Scott Falatach and Jed Prossner all scored goals in the last 2:25 of the match to stage an amazing comeback that led to the overtime period.
In overtime, Virginia's Bill Glading scored the winning goal with 1:40 left in the period.
Virginia's Chris Rotelli led the Cavaliers with three goals on the evening. For the Tar Heels, freshman Scott Falatach had a career high four goals.
On the game, Virginia out-shot North Carolina 45-42 and had a 48-39 advantage in ground balls.
