North Carolina Returns To Win Column With 13-7 Victory Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The No. 14 North Carolina men's lacrosse team returned to the win column for the first time since March 22 Wednesday evening as the Tar Heels cruised past Stony Brook 13-7 before a crowd of 1,849 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on the Stony Brook campus. The win evened the Tar Heels' record at 6-6 while Stony Brook fell to 4-9 on the season.
Carolina featured a balanced offense as Jed Prossner had three goals and one assist, Mike McCall three goals, Austin Garrison two goals and two assists, Lance Zimmerman two goals, Kyle Bell two goals and Scott Falatach two assists. Jason Cappadoro led the Seawolves with two goals and an assist while Kevin Shea had a pair of goals.
The Tar Heels raced to a commanding 9-0 lead with nine minutes left in the second quarter before the Seawolves settled down and made a game of it in the first meeting between the two teams since 1998. Garrison started the scoring for UNC with 14:13 left in the first quarter and his goal was followed by tallies by McCall and Prossner. Carolina then scored three goals in the final 2:18 of the first quarter to run the lead to 6-0. Those goals came off the sticks of McCall, Prossner and Steven Will.
Carolina continued its assault on the Stony Brook goal in the first six minutes of the second quarter with goals by Bell, Garrison and Prossner. Shea scored a pair of extra-man goals for Stony Brook to cut UNC's lead to 9-2 on the half.
Zimmerman and Bell scored the first two goals of the third quarter before the Seawolves had their best run of the game, cutting the UNC lead to 11-5 with 11:06 to play. But that was as close as Stony Brook would get as the teams traded goals the rest of the contest.
UNC outshot the Seawolves 40-26. Paul Spellman continued his fine play in goal for UNC with 12 saves while Errol Wilson made six saves for Stony Brook.
The Tar Heels will play their final regular season game Saturday at 12 noon against Air Force at Fetzer Field. It will be Senior Day in Chapel Hill for seven Tar Heels -- Austin Garrison, Steven Will, Kyle Bell, Andrew Larkin, Joe Hubbard, Peter Anselmo and Bowen White.
