Tar Heels Complete Sweep of Duke, 11-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -North Carolina (31-11 10-5 ACC) defeated Duke (14-25, 0-13 ACC), 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Jeremy Cleveland and Ryan Blake both homered twice and Garry Bakker pitched six strong innings to earn his sixth win of the season. The Tar Heels have won six straight ACC games and nine in a row overall.
Duke took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Javier Socorro singled to lead off the inning and Brian Patrick reached on a walk. Both came around to score when Troy Caradonna homered over the right-center field wall, giving the Blue Devils a three-run advantage.
Carolina got on the board with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Greg Mangum walked and scored two batters later when Jeremy Cleveland blasted his 13th home run of the season off the scoreboard in left-center field.
The Tar Heels went ahead with five more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Chris Iannetta led off with a single and raced home on a double to the center field wall by Mike Daniel. The next batter was Ryan Blake who hit his fourth home run of the season over the screen in left field. With two outs in the inning, Chad Prosser walked and scored when Cleveland hit his second home run in as many innings off the scoreboard.
lake's second two-run homer in as many innings gave Carolina a 9-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
Trailing 11-4 in the top of the eighth, Duke's Brian Patrick hit a solo home run, his third homer in the last two games to bring the Blue Devils within six runs.
Carolina returns to action with games against Elon and East Carolina on Tuesday and Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. Starting time for both games is 6 p.m.
