GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week yesterday by the league office for the second time this season. Cox finished last week with a 4-1 record, throwing 31.1 innings, striking out 30, allowing 16 hits, six walks and had an ERA of 0.22.
The Harrisburg, N.C., native began the week with a win over Elon, pitching five innings, striking out six and walking one. She then picked up her second ACC win over Georgia Tech holding the Yellow Jackets to one run on two hits, while striking out nine.
At the Georgia Tournament, Cox held the leading hitting team in the nation, Bethune-Cookman, to three hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine Wildcat hitters. Cox then shut down the ninth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs for seven innings allowing one team earned run due to the international tiebreaker rule (placing a runner on second in extra innings) but still outdueled UGA's Michelle Green 2-1. Cox shut the Bulldogs down in the title game as well shutting them out for six innings before allowing an unearned run in the seventh inning taking the loss 1-0.
The right-handed pitcher picked up her third save of the season versus Radford in the tourney's semifinal game coming in with the bases loaded and two outs clinging to a two-run lead. Cox struck out the only batter she faced to end the week 4-1 with one save.
The Tar Heels will host UNC Greensboro Wednesday, April 23 for Senior Day at the UNC Softball Complex at 4 p.m. Carolina will then face ACC foe Maryland for its final regular season games in College Park, Md.
