COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of North Carolina softball team wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game two scoring a run in the first and four more in the second inning to down Maryland, 5-1, in game two of the Atlantic Coast Conference finale for both teams at the Terrapin Softball Complex. The Tar Heels' Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) scattered four hits and allowed one unearned run to improve to 24-10 on the season. The win snaps a three-game skid to the Terrapins. Freshman first baseman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) crushed a ball off the center field fence to drive in the first run of the afternoon for the Tar Heels with a stand-up double.
Junior third baseman Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) started the second inning with a line drive off the pitcher that knocked her out of the game. Junior Jessica Robinson (Asheville, N.C.) walked and freshman Michelle Hoffmann (Huntington Beach, Calif.) doubled off the right field fence to collect two Tar Heels as the score advanced to 3-0. Tolleson then reached on an error to score Hoffmann for the fourth run of the game and advanced to second on the throwing error. Senior Quinn Porter (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) hit a double off the fence in left center to drive in the fourth run of the inning and fifth of the game as UNC led 5-0.
The Terrapins scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on an UNC error as the score moved to 5-1. Natalie Grossman doubled to left center and then scored on a throwing error by the Carolina pitcher.
Junior short stop Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) led off the third inning with a double off the top of the center field fence. The Tar Heels stranded her at second base after a line out, pop out and ground out.
