David Thornton was a walk-on in 1999 who later earned a scholarship prior to his senior year from head coach John Bunting. He started every game as a senior and led the team in tackles, was named the team's defensive MVP and earned second-team All-ACC honors. He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2002. In his rookie season, he was the Colts starting nickel linebacker and played on special teams.
What was your experience like at Carolina?
Wow. It was memorable. I think it definitely worked out in my favor, going through the things I went through on and off the field. It helped me develop into an NFL player.
How would you describe your NFL experience after just one season?
It was challenging. It was fun. I'm enjoying what I'm doing and I'm looking forward to having a long and enjoyable career in the NFL.
How did Coach Bunting help you prepare for your first season as a pro?
He mentally and physically prepared me for the next level. The way we trained, the way we practiced helped the transition be a lot smoother for me.
What was your favorite game during your rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts?
Philadelphia Eagles in the regular season. We beat them pretty bad. I think I had 11 tackles that game including special teams and defense.
What was your best play this year?
We punted the ball to Peter Warrick, Cincinnati Bengals. He muffed it a little and as he was trying to recover I got a chance to drill him for old times sake and we recovered the ball on the 8-yard line. We scored a touchdown soon after that.
Did you watch Carolina games this year?
I watched the nationally-televised games. It was frustrating seeing the guys struggle. These guys have a lot of talent. At the same time, it's always good to see your old teammates on TV when they did make good plays.
How do you like playing for Dungy?
Coach Dungy is a great coach. From what I've learned from the veterans, they say he's a player's coach. He protects the guys. I think I'm in the right fit for his defense.
Biggest difference between college football and the NFL?
The speed of the game and the knowledge of the game. You have to know more schemes and have to make more adjustments in the NFL, but the speed of the game is something you realize right away.
What do you do in the offseason?
This offseason I'll spend most of my time with my family, spending time with the guys in Chapel Hill, working out with some of the alumni like Quincy Monk. I have a place in Indy, but when I'm in Chapel Hill, I stay with some of the guys and when I go home to Goldsboro, I stay with my parents.
What was your favorite memory of Carolina?
eating Florida State here in Chapel Hill my last year was probably the biggest accomplishment I was a part of.
