CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia (27-22, 10-11 ACC) defeated North Carolina (36-18 12-10 ACC), 6-4 in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels left ten runners on base and dropped their third straight ACC game. Carolina got a solid effort from starting pitcher Daniel Moore, but the bullpen was once again unable to come through for UNC. Sean Farrell went 2-for-5 with a home run for the Tar Heels in a losing effort.
Virginia put three runs on the board in the top of the first to take an early lead. Matt Dunn singled with one out, then Joe Koshansky walked with two outs. Three consecutive singles by Ryan Zimmerman, Chris Sweet and Paul Gillispie allowed the Cavaliers to get on the board and put the Tar Heels in an early hole.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tar Heels got back into the game by scoring three runs. Sammy Hewitt doubled and Ryan Blake singled to put two runners on base for Chris Iannetta. Iannetta hit his seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right-center field wall to bring Carolina within a run.
After a rough first two innings, Moore retired 11 batters in a row before Eric Christensen singled to lead off the top of the seventh for Virginia. Matt Street then reached on an error by Hewitt, giving the Cavaliers two runners in scoring position. Kevin Brower entered the game in relief of Moore and hit Mark Reynolds with a pitch to load the bases. But Scott Senatore then came in and retired the next two batters to end the inning and Virginia's scoring threat.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Farrell tied the score at four by hitting his eleventh home run of the season, a solo shot over the 355-foot mark in right-center field.
The Cavaliers put two runs on the board in the top of the ninth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Street and Reynolds scored on a two-out, bases loaded single by Zimmerman off of Carolina's Whitley Benson. Street had reached on a single and Reynolds walked with two outs.
The Tar Heels and Cavaliers continue their series with game two of Friday's doubleheader at 7 p.m. The third and final game will begin on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
