Starkville, Miss.- Four members of the North Carolina baseball team were named to the 2003 Starkville Regional All-Tournament Team. Pitcher Matt Danford, first baseman Chris Iannetta, second baseman Greg Mangum, and outfielder Sean Farrell were all honored for their outstanding performances in helping the Tar Heels win an NCAA Regional for the first time since 1989.
Danford picked up the win in Saturday's victory over Mississippi State by pitching 6.1 innings out of the bullpen and giving up just three hits and two runs while striking out six Bulldog batters.
Iannetta reached base six times on the weekend, and recorded four RBIs. His bases-loaded double in Saturday's win over the Bulldogs gave the Tar Heels a comfortable 10-2 lead in the fifth inning.
Mangum had a spectacular weekend at the plate, going 7-for-14 with five RBIs and hit his first career grand slam on Saturday. Mangum was also named to the 2002 Columbia Regional All-Tournament Team during his freshman season last year.
Farrell batted .467 (7-for-15) in Carolina's three wins at Starkville and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional. He went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs in Sunday's comeback victory over Mississippi State. He hit his first home run in the second inning to give the Tar Heels an early lead. His second homer came with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and tied the game after Carolina was trailing 6-4. Farrell capped off his heroic day at the plate by knocking in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the eleventh inning.
