CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? The University of North Carolina's men's and women's golf teams join forces this week to host the Franklin Street Partners Invitational. Each team will host a nine-team field and the two 54-hole events will be played October 3-5 at UNC Finley Golf Course. The men will play a par 72, 7,199-yard layout while the women will play a par 72, 6,285-yard layout. Tee times begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday with teams starting off both the #1 and #10 tees. There will be a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday. The public is invited to attend and there is no admission fee.
This year's Franklin Street Partners Invitational offers a new twist with both the men's and women's teams hosting tournaments. In previous years, only the women were involved.
The men's field consists of host North Carolina, Alabama, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia and UNC Wilmington. Four of the teams are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 25. Kentucky is ranked 14th, UNC Wilmington is 19th, Georgia Southern is 20th and North Carolina is 21st. Carolina is the only team in the top 25 of the Precept Coaches Poll where the Tar Heels are ranked 16th.
"We are very excited to host eight men's teams in this unique format," says Carolina men's head coach John Inman. "I believe co-hosting this tournament with the women's team establishes it as one of the premier events in the country."
The women's field consists of host North Carolina, Auburn, Duke, Florida, NC State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas and Wake Forest. Duke is ranked first in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings while Auburn is second, Oklahoma State is 12th, Florida is 32nd, North Carolina is 33rd and NC State is 34th.
"We are excited about hosting the Franklin Street Partners Invitational," says Tar Heel women's head coach Sally Austin. "There will be some of the best teams in the country competing here at Finley. Finley is a terrific venue to showcase this talent and we are thrilled that Franklin Street Partners has made this event so special."
Both Carolina's men's and women's teams have played in two tournaments so far this fall. The men tied for seventh at the Ping/Golfweek Preview where sophomore Kevin Silva was the runner-up and senior Dustin Bray tied for 20th place. Earlier, they finished 10th at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate where sophomore Ted Smith was the low Tar Heel, tying for 18th place.
Carolina's women's team finished in 12th place at the NCAA Fall Preview where senior Ashley Prange tied for 12th place and senior Meaghan Francella tied for 22nd. Carolina posted a 13th-place finish at the Mason Rudolph Championship where freshman Katie Miller was the low Tar Heel, tying for 17th place.
