Chapel Hill, N.C. - The UNC track and field team hosted the Dick Taylor North Carolina Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House. The Tar Heels were led by Vikas Gowda, as he set a new indoor school record in the shot put, with a mark of 62-8. The UNC men gained first-place spots in the high jump, 800-meter and triple jump, while the women had a first-place finisher in the pole vault and 5,000-meter.
John Hubbard won the high jump event for the third time this year, as he jumped 7-1, his best jump of the year. Freshman Jason Newman won his first event as a collegiate by taking first-place in the 800-meter with a time of 1:56.97. Also for the UNC men, Daniel Harris won the triple jump with a mark of 48-11 3/4 and was followed in second by teammate Lazaris Evans, who had a jump of 47-9 1/4.
Rob Bates provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon, as he garnered 5,151 points. Bates finished third overall. Noah Cosby placed second in the pole vault with a vault of 16-6 3/4, matching his personal record.
The UNC women were led by strong performances from Nicole Boykin, Laura Risi, Terri Matthews, Rhian Jenks and Tatyana Kirichenko. Boykin won the 5,000-meter event with a time of 17:50.02. Risi, Matthews and Jenks swept the top three spots in the pole vault as Risi led the charge with a vault of 12-7 1/2. Matthews and Jenks both vaulted 12-1 1/2. Kirichenko garnered her best jump of the year as she placed second in the high jump event with a mark of 5-8.
There were no team results kept at the meet. North Carolina will next host the Robert "Doc" Seligman Carolina Classic on Feb. 7 at the Eddie Smith Field House. Some members of the UNC squad will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Sevigne Husker Invitational.
