CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Brack Massey went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the BoSox to a 4-3 win in game four of Carolina's Fall World Series Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, the BoSox send the series to a deciding fifth game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Massey provided the early offense for the BoSox, the team formerly known as Fish Unit. His ripped a two-run homer in the second and then followed a Seth Williams home run for the Anglers with a run-scoring double in the fourth to five the Bo Sox a 3-1 advantage.
Sophomore infielder Craig Corrado then came through for the Anglers in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double of his own to trim the BoSox advantage to 3-2 until junior center fielder Blair Waggett pushed the lead back to two runs with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Corrado, who walked to lead off the seventh, eventually came around to score for the Anglers when freshman Kyle Shelton reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead to 4-3.
Both starters were solid, led by the BoSox's redshirt sophomore Matt Danford, who went six innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks. He struck out four en route to the victory. Junior Adam Kalkhof started for the Anglers and allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned five BoSox batters.
Sophomore Robert Woodard came on to work the final three innings for the BoSox to pick up the save. He allowed one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out three. Anglers' freshman Tyler Trice worked four scoreless innings.
Game 4 Notes: Mike Fox said before the games began that his ideal series would be a five-game nailbiter. That's exactly what he has gotten. "We wanted to play five games," he said. "Especially this week we get to play three games back-to-back-to-back, and we haven't gotten to do that all fall. We want to see who keeps their legs and concentration. That's something we have to do on the weekends in the spring, and a lot of our young guys haven't had to do that before."...The Team Formerly Known As Fish Unit pulled a switch before the game, swapping the confusing Fish Unit title (which is still being blamed on an "inside joke" originated by Rob Wooten) for BoSox. The move worked, but there may be another switch in the offing for tomorrow. Depending on the outcome of tonight's ALCS Game 6, there was talk among the Anglers that they might come out as the Yankees on Wednesday...Jay Cox saw his first action of the Series behind the plate on Tuesday. Greg Mangum got work in centerfield in Game 3...
With only one umpire available, Fox had to call the bases. He escaped with just one truly controversial call and also got a different vantage point on some of his hitters. "With me umpiring, I got to stand behind the mound, and I saw a lot," he said. "There was some lack of concentration and swinging at bad pitches. Some of our older guys are dragging a little bit after playing all summer."...Wednesday's Game 5 matchup promises to be a quality pitching duel, matching Daniel Bard and Andrew Miller as the starters. The pair also started Game 1 and turned in six outstanding innings apiece. The deciding game of the series begins at 3 p.m.
